Red, White, and Blue Sangria Spritzer Made with the SodaStream

by Fiona | 06/23/2019

The 4th of July is coming! Time to get funky, time to get festive. And since nothing goes with fireworks quite as well as a few servings of alcohol, let’s make some sangria spritzers! But not just any sangria. Oh no, no, no. We, my friends, are going to make a red, white, and blue fruity wine drink that is fit for a patriotic king. Happy 4th, y’all!

Here’s the downlow on this Patriotic Sangria. Traditionally, sangria is made with Spanish red wine, fruit, and lemonade. This tasty interpretation I’m presenting to you today is comprised of fruit, white wine, triple sec, apple juice, simple syrup, and a splash of club soda. It’s red (cherries and strawberries), white (white wine), and blue (blueberries) with little edible white stars made from apple and white peach slices. Isn’t it just the cutest?

This festive drink is absolutely perfect for 4th of July picnics and get togethers. It’s also low stress because, not only can you make this ahead of time, it tastes better if you do! Here are a few tips to make your drink even more enjoyable:

Make it a Spritzer– or Not – While this recipe is for a spritzer sangria, if you are not down with the bubble action feel free to leave it out. I, personally, love them! Thank goodness I have a SodaStream on hand so I can have bubbly water whenever I want. In fact, if you love the carbonation as much as I do, you can substitute the dry white wine with a sparkling dry white wine. Sooo sparkly! You can buy the highly-rated SodaStream on Amazon or at major retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Kohl’s.)

Save the Apples for Last – As the sangria sits, the juice from the red berries will color the wine a little bit, giving it a rosy hue. If you’d like more contrast in your sangria, hold off on adding the apple slices or stars until right before you serve it. Because these pieces won’t be stained with berry juice, they’ll really stand out!

Make a Kiddie Version – This is such a cute drink! You can be assured if there are kids around, they are going to want to drink it. No worries, try this quick and easy virgin sangria: Simply skip the simple syrup (water and sugar), white wine, and triple sec. Substitute with a large bottle of white grape juice (or sparkling white grape juice) and toss in the fruit. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did. While testing this recipe, my 4 year old son was really disappointed he couldn’t even taste the sangria. But you should have seen how stoked he was when I made him his very own fruity non-alcoholic alternative.

What are you plans for the 4th? What kind of food do you usually enjoy on the holiday? Tell us all about it! See you soon!

Patriotic White Sangria Spritzer

This Patriotic White Sangria Spritzer is perfect for any occasion that requires red, white, and blue. It’s great for 4th of July and Memorial Day get togethers and is easy to make!

Ingredients

  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 red apple
  • 1 green apple, peeled
  • 1 white peach, peeled
  • ½ cup fresh blueberries
  • ½ cup fresh cherries, halved and pitted
  • 10 medium strawberries, greens removed and sliced
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges and then wedges sliced
  • 1 bottle dry white wine, chilled (I used Pinot Grigio)
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • ¼ cup triple sec
  • 1 cup club soda or sparkling water (optional)

  Instructions

  1. Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves. You have now made a simple syrup! Set aside to cool while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
  2. To prepare the fruit, slice the flesh away from the middle. To do this, cut slices around the core of the apples and peach. Take the slices and, using a small star cutter (about 1-inch wide), cut stars out of the slices. If you do not have a star cutter, simply use the fruit slices.
  3. Add the fruit stars or slices, blueberries, halved cherries, sliced strawberries, and lemon wedges to a large pitcher. Pour the wine over the fruit along with the apple juice, triple sec, and the simple syrup you made earlier. Stir to combine. Place the sangria in the refrigerator and allow to marinate for at least 2 hours before serving.
  4. Your white stars or fruit slices will start to take on a reddish color from the juice of the berries, so if you wish to keep some of them white for a better appearance, simply reserve the apple stars or slices and add them right before serving. Since you added apple juice to the sangria, leaving out the apple pieces will not compromise the flavor. Add the sparkling water right before serving, if desired, and enjoy!
