Mother’s Day is just around the corner and seriously, who doesn’t love a pop up card? I’ve never actually made one before this but I’m pretty damn sure this is going to be the first of many.
I love making things for people, especially family because they already know I’m crazy. I live in Sydney now but grew up Adelaide which is where my family are. For those of you who also live away from your family you can probably agree that it’s times like birthdays and Mother’s Day that suck the most! I hope this happy card puts an extra smile on her dial when the postie delivers it this year. (My Mum doesn’t read my blog in case you’re wondering… she has bloody Candy Crush down pat but still a while away from understanding what a blog is. hah! Love her.)
- White card paper
- Coloured paper
- Glue stick
- Sticky tape
- Xacto knife
Make a pop up card:
Fold your card paper into your card shape and from the outside make two identical cuts with your scissors like the below.
Open the card and pull this new tab piece forwards. Carefully close the card to create a fold line at the point and base of the tab. Your card should now look like the below.
Cut your flowers and/or words from coloured paper. The gold letters I used were just stickers I picked up from Spotlight – aren’t they cool??
Sticky tape your flowers/clouds down onto your tabs. Try closing and opening the card a few times to ensure there’s no overhang outside the card / it opens without getting stuck on each other.
Now you want to cover your card on the outside with a new piece of paper. Flatten your card out and trace around it onto your piece of paper. It will need to be slightly bigger than the card because of the fold so give yourself an extra 5mm. Cut and glue it onto the front with a glue stick and be careful not to accidentally glue your tabs at all. I cut a small flower shape out of my cover piece with an Xacto knife for a bit of fun too.
Trim the edges of the card with a ruler and Xacto knife so it’s all nice and neato then you’re done and dusted!
Do you love pop up cards as much as I do? I’d love to hear if you’ve made one before!
