DIY nautical boys party for Sweet Mag by Craft Hunter
A little while ago I was lucky enough to be asked by Sweet Magazine to contribute a special DIY party tutorial for their 4th edition which was all about catering for the boys. Not being able to resort to my usual love for girly colours and flowers was a nice challenge for me and I’m really chuffed with the end result.
My fave element is the paper boat garland – I want to cover a whole wall in these little guys! In case you’re wondering, I used the Daydream Paper Collection from Daily Like and also a mixture of some scrap paper I had lying around. If you’d like to make your own check out the origami tutorial here. I definitely recommend using thin paper if you want to make them any smaller than mine. It looks tricky to start with but I promise once you nail the first one you’ll be doing them with your eyes closed. Once you’ve made them all, pierce through the middle of each boat with a bamboo skewer and string them together with twine. Just tie a little knot where you would like them to sit.
Charlotte from Induldge Me Cupcakes kindly lent me a hand and baked the gorgeous white rose swirl cupcakes and ombre wave cake which pretty much stole the show. You might remember seeing these cupcakes from the Feather Toppers I did a while back too. Ahh it’s a hard life working with all these edible props, but someone has to do it! (my boyfriend also suspiciously became a bigger supporter of my blog that week too….)
The wooden flag cake topper was inspired by a lot of the laser cut cake topper designs which are huge at the moment. I wanted to show people how they can make their own with some basic supplies. Here’s how to make your own…
- Balsa wood sheets from Bunnings
- Xacto knife or scissors
- Gold marker
- Craft glue
- Thickers old letter stickers from Spotlight
Cut out your flag shape in the balsa wood and also cut a piece for your flag pole.
Attach your letter stickers (How great are these gold stickers by the way!?)
Mark the edges of your flag and pole with gold pen
Then just glue your flag to the stick and leave to dry before popping onto your cake.
